MND Association

Support for carers who look after those with MND is an important part of what we do and we are proud to be playing a role in Carers Week 2017.

In our most recent survey of carers we gathered information on what it is like to care for someone with MND. We found that over half of carers spend more than 100 hours per week caring, so clearly the challenges of caring for someone with MND cannot be underestimated. In the same survey, 38% of respondents said they were unaware of their right to a Carers Assessment. In 2016 we used these survey findings and worked with current and former carers, Association volunteers and staff to find out what support carers already get and what gaps need filling. We sent a report to Government which laid out our conclusions and recommendations advising what they needed to do to improve support for carers of people with MND. We will be conducting a further carers survey in 2017 – the results of which will be available in the autumn.

Through our communications with carers and the caring section of our website we try to raise awareness of rights, whether it is the right to a carers assessment or benefits and allowances. In addition we seek to provide information and support for carers who are part of our MND family.

Steve Bell, Director of Care (North) at the MND Association said:

"2017 is an important year as it sees the launch of the Government's Carers Strategy. As well as this, the Association is finalising a report which explores the financial impact of MND for people living with MND and their carers. These two key documents will support the continued development of our services for carers"
