Supporting carers, supporting Carers Week

The charities who lead the Carers Week partnership speak out in support of carers.

Each day this week we will feature one of the charities who make up the Carers Week partnership. Today we lead with Stephen Burke, chief executive of Counsel & Care:

"Carers Week is the first major opportunity to remind politicians in the new parliament of the realities faced by six million carers. Our failing care system means that family carers are increasingly expected to pick up the pieces and shoulder the burden of caring. Many older carers in particular soldier on – without any support – caring for another older person while their own health is affected and their interests put on hold. The Carers Week survey has revealed that carers are struggling to achieve a balance between caring and simply being themselves. It's not that carers don't want to care for their loved ones but we can't ignore the impact that caring has on their own lives. They don't want to be taken for granted and they do want 'a life of their own'."
