Carer Friendly Employer: Sainsbury’s

01 June 2016

In 2011, Sainsbury’s became one of the first FTSE 100 companies to introduce a Carers Policy to support colleagues who juggle work with caring responsibilities.

Around 20,000 colleagues at Sainsbury’s have additional caring responsibilities.

Sainsbury’s Carers Policy supports colleagues with caring responsibilities at every grade and across all divisions. The policy offers a range of options that colleagues can talk through with their line manager. These include:

  • Flexible working: colleagues can request to change their hours, times or place of work, whether this change is temporary, alternative or permanent
  • Carer days: time away from work to attend appointments with the person you care for
  • Time away from work: this could be emergency leave, compassionate leave or reasonable time off to deal with unexpected situations involving the person you care for
  • Carers group: Sainsbury’s has an online Carers group where colleagues can connect, share advice, and support others in their caring situations

The Carers Policy also signposts colleagues with caring responsibilities to organisations which provide expert advice, support and information on a range of caring issues.

Sainsbury’s is also a leading member of Employers for Carers – a business forum supported by Carers UK to drive best practice for employers in supporting carers and creating conditions for employees to care alongside work.
