As a former care worker, I have first hand experience of the huge amount that voluntary as well as professional carers carry out.  It is a hugely underated service that they all give to our whole community and we all owe them a huge debt.  We should recognise that debt by, in every sense of the word, rewarding them properly.  We need to ensure that all carers are respected properly and do all in our power to help them to deliver the highest quality of care to those who need it most and to do so in a way that treats all concerned with dignity, compassion and civility.

Carers are the unseen backbone of society doing a vital job in often difficult emotional and physical circumstances.  I pledge my support to all those who care for others for all or part of their everyday lives, and I will continue to aim to raise their profile and support their work as I take the Equalities Bill through Parliament, as part of my work in the Government Equalities Office.

In York there are thousands of people who sacrifice their time, health, work and social life in order to care for a loved one.  Carers Week gives us the opportunity to thank them for the priceless contribution they make.  It also reminds us that every carer has their own story and we need to take time to listen to them and learn from their experiences.

Carers are the unsung heroes of our society.  Many of them sacrifice career, family life and sometimes their own health and well-being to care for a loved one.  It is vital that we do more to help ease the financial burdens that carers face and also to ensure that they can get proper breaks from their important responsibilities.

People who care do so because they want to help the people they care about, society should not take advantage of this, but rather support them, as they juggle their caring role with all their other responsibilities.  Combining caring with work, training or education can make simply taking a break challenging.  96% of carers feel that society ignores them, making their role even more difficult, many feel at breaking point and in need of support and a break.  We need to care about those who care for others.  It is not a lot to ask that carers should be able to have a life outside caring; that they should have access to relevant practical information; that the systems which are actually intended to support carers and those they care for do not contribute thier frustration; that respite is available when needed and support is available at times of crisis.  We need to recognise what carers do and improve support for them; review allowing people with caring responsibilities to have the opportunity to work flexibly, thus helping them to combine work with their caring roles and to ensure that carers are able to access education and leisure opportunities, to give them a break from caring.  We need to recognise the important role that carers play in our society by supporting their family members and friends.  I hope that Carers Week will highlight the important role that carers play and the debt we owe them.

Jim Cunningham MP

It is my view that it is important that the role of carers is highlighted and that they can share experiences.  During my time as a Member of Parliament I have met many carers and I am aware of the dedication to the people that they care for.  At the same time I am familiar with the sacrifices that carers make - things many of us take for granted are routinely beyond carers.  It is also an opportunity to focus on the number of children who are also carers and what it means for them as they grom up.  I hope that Carers Week will be a success.

Hardly a family in the UK does not have a carer as one of its members.  As our population grows older, the role and numbers of carers will increase.  Carers Week acknowledges the vital work undertaken by the six million or so selfless people in our society who care for others.  It is important for the Government to recognise this.

The work which carers do is utterly invaluable and often goes completely unrecognised.  Carers Week is an excellent way in which we can raise awareness of the work they do to support some of the most vulnerable members of our society.  Often, the sacrifice which carers make is absolutely staggering: giving up their free time and holidays in order to care.  The week will give carers a voice to raise their concerns and talk about their experiences and I look forward to learning how, inside and outside parliament, we can be supporting carers better.

One in ten adults is a carer, as are many young people.  Many give up an income, future employment prospects, pension nights and other opportunities to look after someone, yet the unpaid work of carers saves our economy billions of pounds each year.  We have a responsibility as a nation towards carers to ensure that their own wellbeing is looked after.  I urge every carer in my constituency to get in touch with their local carers' group or social services to make sure they get the support they need.

I am delighted to support the vital role that carers play in our country.  The theme this year, "A life of my own" - Sumes up the importance of not taking carers for granted.  I strongly support the topics highlighted this year.  It is hugely important that we understand how caring affects carers' lives, the importance of good imformation for carers, access to a break when needed and for effective support at times of crisis.  Over the last few years, there have been some welcome improvements, such as additional funding for carers' breaks, but there is much more to be done and I will continue to press for further improvements.

I support Carers Week because it gives us all the chance to recognise what carers do and to think about the support and services they need to support them.  There are twenty thousand people across Salford caring for a family member or a friend.  They deserve to be recognised and supported for the contribution they make to social care that is so vital for the people they care for.  Caring can affect the carer's own health and I will continue to campaign for better identification of carers and for higher levels of support.

I am very pleased to offer my support for Carers Week 2010.  It is vital that we recognise the work of carers and provide more effective support.  Liberal Democrats would give a guaranteed week's break to the 1 million carers who work more than 50 hours a week.  There should be maximum flexibility about when and how this is taken.  But we also need to provide improved access to advice, guidance and support when a crisis occurs.

Is is absolutely crucial that carers are awarded with the recognition they deserve.  The work they do and the service they perform is of great importance.  I welcome the communication between Carers Week and the Government to enable more to be done to give more support to carers.  The emphasis for Carers Week 2010 is on ensuring that those who help, care for and support those in our society who need it are able to have a life of their own.  Carers can often miss out on parts of life that most will take for granted.  It is up to us all whether it is in Parliament, Government or society as a whole to ensure that Carers have the support they need.  Their selfless devotion to helping others, in a professional capacity or otherwise, is to be commended and it is only right that they receive the recognition for the work they do.

Ian Lucas MP

I am delighted to offer my support to "National Carers Week".  Run by "Carers UK", National Carers Week aims to raise awareness of carers and to ensure that they are receiving the help that they are entitled to.  This is a national issue and there are nearly 6 million carers in Britain, including many in my constituency of Wrexham.  Whilst the role of caring can be very fulfilling, caring for another can have a major impact on every day life, and the ongoing responsibility can be exhausting.  Therefore, it is essential that there is more recognition of all different issues affecting carers, and that carers receive all the help that they rightfully deserve.  This is why I am urging any carers to contact Carers UK, to receive practical information on this issue.  Carers fulfill a vital role in society, and without them our NHS and social care system would be hugely affected.  I am always impressed when I meet carers by how dedicated they are, these individuals are a credit to society.  If any of my constituents are concerned about this important issue, I would be very happy to meet with them to discuss this.

Peter Luff MP

The work of a carer is relentless and it can be as draining as it is rewarding and the carer must never feel they are working entirely alone.  I fully give my support to Carers Week and I pledge to help Carers UK continue to be a vital force in voicing the concerns of carers.

There are almost five million unpaid carers in England, with a million providing more than 50 hours care each week.  These people provide a vital service for their loved ones and deserve the recognition the Carers Week is providing.  I also believe that people who selflessly provide care to their loved ones deserve a break.  In most jobs you get paid holidays but for a huge number of carers that simply isn't an option.  Caring matters deeply to families and individuals but when you are taking care of somebody you also need to think about caring for yourself.  Sustaining the ability and health of carers to provide the care and support they give to others is of critical importance and I welcome Carers Week as an opportunity to give carers the support they need.

Carers play a crucial role in looking after the ill, the elderly and the disabled.  We should do everything in our power to support them.

Anne Snelgrove MP

I am delighted that, as a part of Carers Week, I have been offered the chance to show my support for carers and the work they do.  The fact that over 200 local organisations have 'signed up' for Carers Week shows how much potential the event has to make a positive impact on poeples lives.  I never fail to be surprised at the amount of hard work and dedication that carers give to help people.  Their decision to sacrifice so much of their time and energy, for no pay, to helping those who need it most, is one I have an infinite amount of respect for.

The thousands of carers in my constituency deserve better support for the very demanding task they perform in caring or their spouses, parents or disabled children.  Better and more frequent respite care is essential to give carers the time they need for themselves and to give them a break.

I have met many carers from children through the to quite elderly people.  They deserve our unstinting support.  It is vital to recognise the massive contribution that carers make in Britain.  Their sacrifices of time, effort and commitment are unrivalled and deserve much better recognition.  Carers Week is a great opportunity to raise awareness of their invaluable dedication.

Carers are often the forgotten heroes of our communities and that is why I support the efforts made by the Carers Week initiative to recognise the devoted service they provide.  I am very aware that many carers make significant sacrifices in their own lives to care for the people they love.  Government should never forget in policy making the hidden army of volunteers that are as good as any paid employee of the state.

We are enormously fortunate in and Andover to have the Princess Royal Trust for Carers providing a high-quality service to carers.  I enjoy attending the regular events that they hold, finding out about the good work which they do but also finding out about the challenges that lie ahead, and which MPs of all parties need to address.
