About Sense

For everyone living with complex disabilities. For everyone who is deafblind. Sense is here to help people communicate and experience the world.

We believe that no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, should be isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential.

Our experts offer personalised support through our centres, holidays and short breaks, or in people’s own homes. We are here for everyone who needs us, for as long as they need us – providing early intervention for children, helping young people access education, and supporting the transition into adulthood and beyond.

In addition to practical support, we also offer information to families and campaign for the rights of people with complex disabilities to take part in life.

How we support carers

We have a range of ways in which disabled people and carers alike can feel supported by Sense, whether through our Sense Living services which provide support around housing and individual support or via our dedicated Information and Advice team that can provide expertise on a range of issues such as health and social care and benefits and education.

We have a number of resources available to support disabled people and family carers, including our Decisions to Make, Steps to Take toolkit that helps families to plan for the future. This can be requested from our Information and Advice team or downloaded directly from our website here.

Our Sense Holidays and Short Breaks team provides opportunities for disabled people to go on holiday to make new friends and try out new activities. This is important for all the family as it gives a chance for family carers to have a break from caring. Alongside this we also run events for siblings and family days to provide opportunities for families to make connections and peer support.

Richard Kramer, Chief Executive of Sense:

Carers play a vital role in the lives of the millions of disabled people across the country. They support people to live the lives they want to live, access important services and ensure that, no matter how complex their disabilities are, they are not left out of life.

We know from our own research for Sense’s When I’m Gone campaign that there are millions of family carers across the country who feel unable to take a break for themselves as they continue to provide an enormous amount of support for a family member. They also feel concerned about the future and how to effectively plan for the care and support their loved one will receive when they are no longer able to provide it.

This is why we’re proud to be a part of Carers Week; to be able to raise the profile of people supporting and caring for disabled people, highlight the need for more support and to celebrate the vital work they do day in and day out.
