Celebrating our Working Carers for Carers Week

12pm to 2pm Booking is not required It’s Carers Week from Monday 10 June to Sunday 16 June recognising the amazing work carers do. The theme this year is Getting Carers Connected. If you juggle work with caring for another person or have done so in the past you’re not alone. One in nine people in the UK juggle unpaid caring for a friend or family member who cannot cope without their support because of illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction. Salford City Council is holding an event for our working carers to hear your views and experiences and provide information on services you can connect to. Refreshments will be provided. It builds on the one we held in November to help understand how we can make things easier and support working carers. It will be a welcoming, informal, safe, and confidential discussion where we will listen to your feedback and develop our support shaped by your experiences as well as having the opportunity to connect with each other. Colleagues from the carers social workers team, welfare rights and the Gaddum Carers Centre and others will be there to provide advice. There’s no need to book - just come along to the Salford Suite at the Civic Centre between 12 noon and 2pm on 14 June. If you need any extra information or help, please contact Justine Cuddy - call 0161 607 8638 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. The Gaddum Centre is also hosting Greater Manchester’s first ever Carers Fest on Saturday 15 June at the People’s History Museum, Manchester from 10.30am to 4pm. Tickets are free but please book. Activities will include live musical performances, wellbeing workshops, educational sessions and a carers’ makers market. It’s about creating a carnival feeling to celebrate carers as well as sharing information.

Who Cares?

At Bourne Galletly Medical Practice we believe that caring for you is as important as caring for our unwell patients. Registering you as a carer enables us to regularly check on your health, offer you access to vaccinations, easier appointments, refer you for help when you need it. Here is how we can help: • We will contact you once a year to ask how you are and see how we can help • We have a Facebook carers group you are welcome to join (Bourne Galletly Medical Practice Carers’ Support) • Our PPG have produced a leaflet on community support, please pick one up or call and we can send one to you • We can refer you for a carers assessment, please ask your GP We are promoting the possibility of becoming a registered carer at our practice and offering patients who are carers an additional layer of help, as detailed above. We currently have 1% of our practice population registered as carers, we aim to double it by the end of next week. To do this our GPs are calling patients who we feel may have carers, asking for their permission and further details, then calling these carers, explaining how we can help and offering further support.

Have you added your event for Carers Week?

You can now register your event on the Carers Week map for 2019. Last year there were more than 1,200 events added to our Carers Week Map. This year, Carers Week is in its 25th year and so we hope to see many more amazing events and activities for carers registered on our website!

No matter how big or small your event is, your activity will make a difference to carers in your local area.  Your event could be an information stand in your local hospital or it could be the launch of a new charter for carers in your workplace, or even a coffee morning with the local carers' association. Every activity counts!
