Minister for Community and Social Care discusses Carer Friendly Communities in Parliament

11 June 2015

Carers Week charities came together yesterday in Parliament, with the Rt Hon Alistair Burt MP - new Minister for Community and Social Care, Rt Hon Caroline Spelman MP,

Margaret Dangoor who cares for her husband, NHS England, ADASS and Employers for Carers. The discussion focussed how we can all build Carer Friendly Communities that better recognise and support carers.

The findings of Carers Week's research into carers' experiences of their communities formed the basis of a really constructive conversation which ranged from how hospitals can be encouraged to adopt carer friendly policies, to the role of employers enabling employees who care to support each other through peer to peer networks, and the benefits for families when a health or care professionals takes on a coordinating role.

Carers Week will shortly be publishing a report including the full results of its research on Building Carer Communities and the discussion and recommendations arising from the Roundtable event.

Over 2,000 organisations, groups and individuals have signed-up to take part in Carers Week this year, including local authorities, carers groups, NHS trusts, charities, GP practices, individuals and more.

Thousands of events and activities are taking place throughout the UK between Monday 8 and Sunday 14 June for Carers Week to recognise, support and celebrate carers.
